Jackson Daily News, Jackson, Miss., Jan. 5, 1915:
Word reaches here from Vicksburg of the death of Mr. Samuel French, aged eighty-two years, a brother-in-law of Mrs. Emma French, of this city.
The deceased was a former citizen of Jackson, having resided here for many years. He was widely known as the oldest Odd Fellow in Mississippi, and perhaps in the union, having been a member of that order for sixty-one years.
The deceased was a frequent visitor in Jackson up to a few years ago, when failing health made travel difficult. He was always in attendance at the grand lodge sessions, and was held in much reverence and esteem by the delegates.
Mr. French is survived by two children, Mrs. Sophia Thomas and Miss Tennie French, both of Vicksburg. The funeral services were held tin that city, conducted by Rev. J. S. Hillhouse, pastor of the Presbyterian church.

Grand Lodge Publication of Memorial Service for Samuel French:
On the night of January 3rd, 1915, God’s finger touched the great heart of our esteemed and beloved Brother and he slept. For some time past, those of us who knew and remembered him realized that he was nearing the completion of his earthly pilgrimage; that he was waiting for the call of Him to whom he had devoted his life as a true Odd Fellow.
He served with distinction as a Confederate soldier throughout the Civil War; he was always a kind and indulgent father, and a loyal and loving husband. He possessed the courteous and gracious manners of a true gentleman, a warm heart and open hand, and he cheerfully gave the best that he had, not only to the order, but every man, woman, and child who needed him. He was preceded to the grave by his devoted and loving wife more than a year ago.
